Pineapple

It all starts with pineapple, which is an important source of the enzyme bromelain and has a variety of health and therapeutic benefits to offer. “Bromelain has anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antimicrobial, and antithrombotic properties,” Roxana Ehsani, MS, RD, CSSD, LDN, Miami-based registered dietitian nutritionist and national media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, previously told Good+Good . “Research has suggested that this enzyme may also be beneficial in helping to reduce inflammation in people with inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.”

But aside from its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits, the bromelain found in pineapple also has some key benefits for bladder health. “Bromelain can boost the immune system and improve recovery from urinary tract infections,” says Sally Sartin, MD, a board-certified family physician and women’s health expert at K Health.

As such, notes Erin Hendriks, MD, a board-certified physician and functional medicine practitioner at Salvo Health, “Bromelain is often used as a supplement for people with inflammatory bowel conditions.”

Cranberry juice

Then there’s natural cranberry juice, which is often associated with helping relieve symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). “Cranberries have phenolic and flavonoid compounds, both of which may play a role in preventing UTIs,” says Dr. Hendriks. “Studies suggest that these compounds may help prevent infection by decreasing the number of intrusive bacteria and reducing inflammation. Blueberries are also exceptionally high in a compound called proanthocyanidins, which have long been known to have antimicrobial properties. Similar effects can be seen in the gut, where blueberry proanthocyanidins can prevent bacterial infections, reduce biofilm formation, and decrease inflammation.”

Keep in mind, however, that to experience the greatest benefits of cranberries for your urinary system, Dr. Sartin recommends taking cranberry supplements or drinking cranberry juice consistently for at least several months.

Yogurt

“Yogurt also plays an important role in improving urinary and digestive health, as it appears to enhance immune and anti-inflammatory responses in the gut,” says Dr. Hendriks.

Additionally, according to Dr. Sartin, “There is some evidence that yogurt containing live, active cultures may be helpful in promoting overall bladder health and avoiding UTIs. This is especially true if you eat it constantly.”

bananas

Finally, there is the almighty banana, which is high in fiber and as such can indirectly improve bladder health. “The high fiber content of bananas can help regulate bowel movements and, in turn, help prevent any problems with the bladder to regulate urine flow,” says Dr. Sartin. “If the bladder cannot empty properly, one may be at higher risk of developing a UTI.”
