Pete Davidson gets it. Also Helen Mirren and Jon Hamm, and us too. We rarely get in the same boat as those celebs, but we’re all on the same page about one thing: the fuss over Cariuma’s beloved sneakers. The celebrity-favorite brand (Whitney Port, Nina Agdal, and Chris Martin are also fans of the brand) creates versatile, sustainably-made sneakers that not only look great, but are also earth-friendly. Win win.
If you’re treating yourself to a new pair of sneakers for fall, perhaps to enjoy those nostalgic back-to-school vibes even if you’re long past graduation, this is the pair: Cariuma’s IBI Slip-On Sneaker ($98 ) . Meet the laceless cousin of Cariuma’s fan-favorite IBI low top sneaker, and while they both deserve a spot in your shoe cabinet, we love the ease of slip-ons. After being out of stock for weeks, the slip-ons are finally back in stock (but probably not for long).
They’re made from the same soft, breathable fabric that Cariuma is known for, so they’re light enough to wear on those sweltering late summer nights and provide enough coverage to keep your feet warm when the fall chill hits. That makes them the perfect transition shoe from summer to fall, whether you’re enjoying an afternoon by the pool or sipping a PSL while looking at the leaves.
My honest thoughts on the IBI slip-on shoe
For my first pair of Cariumas, I selected the plain white slip-ons to replace my no longer white sneakers that deserved to retire. I was immediately impressed with how the IBIs seemed to mold to the exact shape of my foot on first wear. The memory foam cork footbed probably owes it in part, as does the innovative knit design.
Innovation is part of the spirit of Cariuma. The IBI Slip-Ons are proudly the lowest carbon footprint shoe ever made, which is why Mother Nature loves these shoes as much as we do. They’re made from sustainably sourced bamboo and recycled plastics, and produce three times fewer emissions than the industry average per pair. Also, like all Cariuma shoes, for every pair you buy, two trees will be planted in the Brazilian jungle. I also appreciated that they arrived at my door (with free express shipping!) in the same shoebox with minimal, fully recyclable packaging, not a box within a box full of foreign materials that I’ll feel guilty about for days.
IBI Slip-Ons are available in men’s and women’s sizes from sizes 5 to 13, including half sizes. Although I chose the white pair, I also have my eye on the red knit pairs and the playful leopard prints, and they will most likely be new members of my shoe collection sooner rather than later. Their versatility makes them essential, as they are very easy to combine with any outfit. Leggings and sweatshirt? Yes. A linen dress? Also if. At the airport, where you can easily put them on and take them off through security? Definitely.
While I am always delighted with a new pair of shoes, the break-in period can be a drag. If you’re prone to blisters, like me, my poor feet are scarred from breaking in new shoes, opt to wear socks with them that the first pair wears. While the IBIs fit me true to size, hugging my feet, they still rub against my heels a bit. (However, I limp through a transition period with almost every new pair of shoes.) If your feet aren’t as sensitive to new shoes, you can probably ditch the socks.
While scuffs, dirt, and some questionable odors are unavoidable with sneakers — and especially white sneakers — IBIs are machine washable, so there’s no need to be precious in them. Before you throw them in the washing machine, remember to take your insoles off and use a cold water setting. Then they will be like new with just one cycle.
Good luck deciding which pair of these everyday sneakers to go for. With a variety of standout colors, classic neutrals, and bold patterns, you may need to add more than one pair to your cart, either for yourself or as a sure-fire gift. (I picture my mom loving the blush-colored pair, and my goddaughter, who’s in third grade, rocking the polka dot slip-ons.) Cariuma sneakers are notoriously sold out, so if your preferred size and color aren’t dilly dally grab a pair.
