Congested skin doesn’t feel good. Even if you don’t have a ton of pimples, when your pores are clogged, it can be irritating. If this is something you deal with on a regular basis, incorporating a gentle exfoliating toner could be a game changer. Medik8 just released one that’s made with the crème de la crème of the dirt-removing, pore-soothing ingredients dermis love: salicylic acid, tranexamic acid, and aloe vera. Plus, you get an additional hydration boost from the sake.

“Pores can get filled with dirt, oil, sweat, makeup” and dead skin cells, says Purvisha Patel, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Visha Skincare. Board-certified dermatologist Marnie Nussbaum, MD adds that “once sweat and oil sit on the skin, the pores become clogged and lead to inflammation. The excess oil also allows the growth of P. acnes, the acne-causing bacteria.

Regular exfoliation with the ingredients in Medik8 Press & Clear ($38) can help unclog pores and keep them clean. Simply dab a little on a cotton pad and wipe over clean skin. It feels light, doesn’t sting, and is alcohol-free, so it doesn’t leave skin feeling dry or tight.

Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) known for its ability to clean pores. In this formula, 2 percent salicylic acid is encapsulated for gentle release.

“BHAs encourage exfoliation, which helps prevent and treat blocked pores, and can also help diminish some types of superficial hyperpigmentation,” David Lortscher, MD, dermatologist and founder of Curology, previously told Well+Good. Salicylic acid “works by penetrating and dislodging dirt (sebum) in the pores so it’s no longer trapped, reducing the chances of triggering an acne breakout.”

Tranexamic Acid is a brightening ingredient that helps even out discoloration while reducing inflammation that can be caused by clogged pores. “It will help soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and help promote the health of the skin’s natural barrier,” says Colorado-based board-certified plastic surgeon Manish Shah, MD.

Aloe vera can also make a big difference. “It’s not just [aloe vera] super soothing, but it helps heal bacteria that could be causing acne,” Valerie Grandury, founder of skincare Odacite, previously told Well + Good. The toner also includes sake extract that is derived from the water of fermented rice and is rich in natural amino acids and is super soothing and moisturizing.

All of these ingredients together create an effective exfoliator that is gentle enough to work into your daily routine, keeping your pores clean and soothed.
