From skinny jeans to bootcut flares to vintage wide legs, we’ve seen fashion trends come in and out of style. But this year, there’s one pant style making a comeback from our Y2K wardrobes: cargo pants. Dia & Co reported that Google searches for cargo jeans are up 33 percent this year in the US. Meaning: Cargo jeans are going to be the “it” jeans this coming fall and winter, so better stock up now. .

Known for their loose, baggy fit, cargo jeans are stylish yet functional and feature a design that’s not distracting. Not to mention, they have pockets deep enough to hold all your essentials (think: wallet, keys, phone, and lip balm). For this reason, we want a pair in every color and fabric, including cargo jeans.

What are cargo jeans? Let me explain. It’s what happens when cargo pants and jeans have a baby (not a literal one), that is, the pants take on a cargo silhouette while having a jean fabric. Like regular cargo, they’re comfortable, functional, and go well with everything: cropped sweaters, chunky boots, and cardigans, you name it. It’s no wonder why they’re back in style, and this fall, there are several pairs we’ve been eyeing. For example, this Ragged Priest pair from Urban Outfitters comes in a dark wash and is finished with zippers (so be on the lookout).

Mix in a flannel or jacket to complete the look.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Curve Low Rise Carpenter Jean — $50.00

Originally $100, now $50

Sure, Abercrombie & Fitch has a troubled past (anyone saw the Netflix doc?). But these days, it’s under new leadership and offers a better-than-average range of inclusive sizes, an impressive array of jean styles, and the prices are very affordable. Basically, A&F did a complete overhaul, and now it’s our go-to place for awesome, cheap jeans. Including these cargo or “carpenter” style jeans. With three washes, these Y2K jeans give you a relaxed fit, low rise (but not too low! I know we have scars, fellow millennials), and the extra 2″ through the hip and thigh eliminates any waist.-concern gap.It will be one of the most comfortable pants you will own.

Cotton Over Carpenter Jean — $70.00

We love that they’re available in eight different colors, including this washed light blue (but also lilac and autumnal brown with flower embroidery). These are also listed as “carpenter” jeans, which means they’re also super relaxed and have lots of pockets, just like cargo jeans. These are a bit stiffer (great if you prefer your denim not to stretch throughout the day; they’ll hold their true shape) and are also made with 20 percent recycled cotton (rating).
