It’s no secret that the more comfortable and better-fitting a shoe is, the less cute it tends to be. I mean, I know of very few podiatrists who would accept 6-inch stilettos as their #1 choice for feet. (No, Iggy Azalea, not “I’ll walk a mile in these Louboutins”.) Now, chunky clogs? An orthopedic sandal? The polarizing crocodile? They’re arguably less sexy and chic, sure, but they’re definitely kinder to your tender feet and ankles.

So, keep this in mind when I introduce my feet’s newest friend, the Oofos Oocandoo Sandal ($100), which, yeah, definitely isn’t the cutest shoe in my closet, but it’s from far the most comfortable.

Oofos, Oocando Sandal — $100.00

Available sizes: Female 6-15

It comes in black, as well as black/pink and black/royal blue, though those colorways are now sold out.

Oofos is known for its ridiculously padded recovery shoes that are like little mattresses for your feet. They’re made with a proprietary sockliner that reportedly absorbs 37 percent more shock with each step, giving sensitive toes and arches a much-needed break from unforgiving surfaces. Ultimately, this mega cushion reduces stress on your joints from your feet up, alleviating stress on your knees, hips and back. You don’t need a DPM to know that Louboutins can’t do that.

As for the Oocandoo sandal, it’s one of the brand’s newest styles, and happens to be my go-to shoe for travel and outdoor activities. It’s a closed toe, closed back sandal designed with a hook and loop closure that makes it easy to slip on and off whenever you want. Although they’re a shoe, they’re just as lightweight as the brand’s original recovery flip flops and are cut for breathability and waterproofing outdoors.

And yes, I will say it: they are not cute. Honestly, dear reader, they are quite ugly. But you know what? they are comfortable as hell. And at this point in my life, I prefer function to fashion any day of the week.

Don’t judge a book by its cover – these sandals are great.

As someone who overpronates quite severely, finding a supportive and functional sandal isn’t easy. And, since my feet are so narrow, finding a style that actually stays in place and doesn’t slip while I’m on the go is even more challenging. That’s what I love about the Oofos Oocandoo: the proprietary foam sockliner is divine on my feet and provides plenty of support for my arches as I stride. And, since they’re closed back, they stay in place once they’re Velcroed on. I don’t have to worry about chafing or blisters, I can roam without worry.

Which is exactly what I do. I’ve worn my Oocandoo sandals on afternoon walks on rivers and streams, on walks around the neighborhood with my dog, and on our boat when I want a shoe that can get wet but has traction control. I’ve used them through rivers, roots, and rocks, up and down hills, and through puddles and muddy parking lots. Their closed-cell foam design lets them shed water and sweat almost instantly, and it’s super easy to clean when they get dirty. (Fun fact: they are machine washable, so if Really needs a good scrubbing, you can throw them in the wash).

Are my Oofos Oocandoo sandals my most fashionable and attractive girl’s shoes? Absolutely not. Are my most reliable shoes that I can wear almost anywhere without pain or discomfort? They sure are. And that’s worth a lot more than any pair of red-bottomed high heels, IMHO. Take care of your feet with your own Oofos sandals here.
