How to take the wall test to know how you see the world

Start by imagining that you have been walking in the desert for a few days, says psychotherapist elizabeth fedrick, PhD, LPC. You are likely exhausted, hungry, and thirsty at this point. Now imagine yourself going through a wall. (Note: This wall test purposely doesn’t specify a wall image – that’s up to your imagination to decide.)

“When you put your ear to this wall, you hear an oasis on the other side,” says Dr. Fedrick. The goal is to figure out how you will get past this barrier (also known as a wall) and get to the oasis. “This is very symbolic of the reality that many of us face in life of wanting to achieve a goal or a certain outcome and being faced with real-life barriers and obstacles that need to be overcome in order to achieve this goal.”

The four options are: “go over the wall, under the wall, around the wall, or through the wall,” says Dr. Fedrick. Take a moment to consider which of the four options you would choose in this scenario. Then scroll down to find out what your answer says about his personality style.

If you choose to jump the wall…

“These people are said to be ambitious, driven and even high achievers,” says Dr. Fedrick. “They are very confident in themselves and their abilities and believe that they can achieve anything they put their mind to.” She adds that people who choose this option also don’t let barriers and obstacles stop them, so they are willing to jump over the wall.

If you choose to crawl under the wall…

People who choose to go under the wall aren’t afraid to do the dirty work, literally and figuratively. In fact, they welcome difficult tasks. “These people have overcome a lot in their lives and are willing to put in the hard work to achieve the results they want,” says Dr. Fedrick.

If you choose to walk around the wall…

If you’re looking for the path of least resistance, this is it, and that doesn’t mean you’re lazy either. “It is sometimes suggested that these people are lazy or trying to find the ‘easiest’ solutions,” says Dr. Fedrick. “However, these people would state that they prefer efficiency over everything else and therefore will always look for ways to achieve their goals as quickly, easily and efficiently as possible.”

If you choose to break the wall…

Some people may see these people as pessimistic or cynical, but they are likely to see themselves as realists. “These people might suggest that there is no hope for humanity and base these sentiments on the many hard times and hardships they have already endured and overcome,” says Dr. Fedrick. “Because of these difficult times, these people have become ‘strong’ and believe that their will power or personal strength can simply break down the barriers that stand in their way.”

Food to go

While the wall test is definitely an entertaining (and usually quite accurate) way to explore how people cope and deal with adversity, it’s important to remember that it’s a pseudopsychology personality assessment, “meaning it doesn’t necessarily have research to support the validity or reliability of the assessment,” says Dr. Fedrick. In other words, the wall test is just for fun. So, to take your findings with tweezers.
